Quick Facts About Afghanistan
Discover Afghanistan
Welcome to Afghanistan β one of the most ancient crossroads on Earth! Nestled in the heart of Asia, Afghanistan is a land of breathtaking contrasts: towering snow-capped peaks of the Hindu Kush soar above green river valleys, while the vast deserts of the south shimmer in the heat. With over 40 million people and a history stretching back thousands of years, Afghanistan has been home to some of the world's greatest civilisations β from the ancient Zoroastrians to the mighty Kushan Empire.
Afghanistan sat at the very heart of the Silk Road β the great ancient trading network that connected China, Persia, India, and Europe. Merchants, scholars, and armies passed through its mountain passes for centuries, bringing with them spices, silk, ideas, and stories. The city of Kabul, the capital, has a recorded history of over 3,500 years β making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth. Herat, in the west, was once a great centre of art, literature, and architecture during the Timurid Renaissance in the 15th century, producing stunning mosques, minarets, and miniature paintings that were the envy of the world.
What makes Afghanistan truly special is the extraordinary resilience and warmth of its people. Afghan culture celebrates poetry β the medieval poet Rumi was born near the city of Balkh, in northern Afghanistan! Traditional music played on the rubab (a plucked lute) fills homes and celebrations with rich, haunting melodies. Afghan hospitality β called "melmastia" in Pashto β is legendary: a guest is always welcomed, fed, and protected. The ancient game of Buzkashi, played on horseback with a goat carcass instead of a ball, is Afghanistan's national sport and one of the world's most dramatic athletic spectacles. From magnificent hand-knotted carpets woven with centuries of tradition to the bright kites that fill the skies of Kabul on winter Fridays, Afghanistan is a place of extraordinary beauty and enduring spirit.
