Benin is a small but historically significant country tucked into the coast of West Africa. Despite its size, this nation has a story that echoes across the entire world — because it is the birthplace of Vodun (Voodoo), one of the world's oldest living religions, still widely practised today with colourful ceremonies and great spiritual meaning.
Millions of years of powerful kingdoms shaped this land. The Kingdom of Dahomey was one of Africa's most organised and feared states, known for its all-female warrior regiment called the Agojie (Dahomey Amazons) — the inspiration for warriors in the film Black Panther! The royal palaces of Abomey are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ouidah, a coastal city, holds deep significance in world history. The Door of No Return stands on its beach — a powerful memorial to the millions of enslaved Africans who were transported across the Atlantic Ocean. Today it stands as a symbol of memory, resilience, and connection between Africa and its diaspora.
Cotonou, the largest city, buzzes with energy. The Dantokpa Market is one of West Africa's largest open-air markets, overflowing with fabrics, spices, and crafts. Porto-Novo, the official capital, has fascinating colonial architecture and vibrant cultural life. Benin is a place where ancient traditions and modern Africa meet with pride.
