Football has been played in Canada since the late 1800s, when British settlers brought the game across the Atlantic. The first international match on Canadian soil took place in 1885, and the Canadian Soccer Association was founded in 1912 — making it one of the oldest football associations in the Americas.
Canada's greatest moment of the 20th century came at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. It was the country's first ever World Cup, and although they were eliminated in the group stage without scoring a goal, the achievement inspired a generation of young Canadian players and laid the foundations for future growth.
