Discover France

France is the largest country in Western Europe and one of the world's most visited nations, attracting over 90 million tourists each year. It is a country of extraordinary variety — from the snow-capped Alps and the rugged Atlantic coast to the lavender fields of Provence, the vineyards of Bordeaux, and the iconic Seine River that flows through the heart of Paris. The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Notre-Dame de Paris are among the world's most recognised landmarks.

France is one of the world's largest wine producers and a global leader in luxury goods, fashion, and gastronomy. French cuisine is so influential that it was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2010. France is also a major industrial power and one of the world's most important aerospace, pharmaceutical, and nuclear energy nations, home to companies like Airbus and LVMH.

With a population of over 68 million people, France is one of Europe's most diverse nations. Its overseas territories stretch across the world — from the Caribbean and French Guiana to the Pacific Islands — making France one of the few countries with a presence in every ocean. The French language is spoken by over 300 million people worldwide, and French culture has influenced art, literature, philosophy, and politics for centuries.

⚽ The History of Football in France

Football arrived in France in the late 19th century, brought by English traders and visiting schoolchildren. The game took root gradually, particularly in the northern industrial cities like Lille and Paris where English workers had introduced it.

France's first football clubs emerged in the 1890s. The Fédération Française de Football (FFF) was established in 1919, making France one of the newer major football nations compared to England and other European pioneers. However, what France lacked in early history, it would make up for with innovation and style.

The professional league, Division 1 (now Ligue 1), was officially launched in 1932. This marked the beginning of France's journey as a serious football power. In the mid-20th century, France produced some of Europe's most elegant and influential players — Michel Platini of the 1980s became a global icon, leading France to the 1984 European Championship.

The true turning point came in 1998. France hosted the FIFA World Cup and produced one of football's greatest moments. Led by a golden generation including Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, and Patrick Vieira, they defeated Brazil in the final with Zidane scoring twice. A nation celebrated its greatest sporting achievement.

Two decades later, France reasserted their dominance. In 2018, a new generation featuring Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann, and Paul Pogba won the World Cup in Russia, defeating Croatia in the final. France became only the second nation to win the World Cup twice in the modern era.
