Panama is a narrow S-shaped country in Central America, connecting North and South America and separating the Pacific Ocean from the Caribbean Sea. Its strategic location at this geographic crossroads has made it one of the most important places on Earth for global trade and travel. Panama is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world — though it covers less than 0.1% of the Earth's surface, it contains nearly 10% of the world's bird species and over 10,000 plant species.
The Panama Canal is one of humanity's greatest engineering achievements. Completed in 1914, it stretches 80 kilometres across the isthmus of Panama and allows ships to cross between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in hours rather than weeks. Over 14,000 ships transit the canal each year, carrying around 5% of world trade. The canal generates enormous revenue for Panama and has made Panama City one of the most cosmopolitan and prosperous capitals in Central America.
With a population of around 4.3 million people, Panama is a melting pot of cultures. The majority of Panamanians are mestizo (mixed Indigenous and European heritage), with significant Afro-Panamanian, Indigenous, and immigrant communities. Panama City's skyline — a forest of modern skyscrapers alongside Spanish colonial neighbourhoods — reflects the country's extraordinary economic dynamism. Panama uses the US dollar as its currency alongside the Balboa, reflecting its deep historic and economic ties to the United States.

Flag of Panama
Panama's flag is divided into four rectangles — white with a blue star, blue, red, and white with a red star. The white represents peace, blue symbolises the Conservative Party, and red represents the Liberal Party. The blue star stands for civic virtue and the red star for law and authority. The design reflects Panama's desire for reconciliation between its main political factions at independence.
⚽ The History of Football in Panama
Football has been the most popular sport in Panama for over a century, with the Federación Panameña de Fútbol founded in 1937. The national team, known as Los Canaleros — a reference to the famous Panama Canal — has been a consistent CONCACAF competitor since the mid-20th century. But for decades, the ultimate prize — a FIFA World Cup — seemed just out of reach.
Panama came heartbreakingly close to World Cup qualification several times. In 2014, they missed out on the final qualifying position by a single point. The near-miss only strengthened the nation's resolve, and a golden generation of players — led by the powerful striker Blas Pérez, the experienced Rommel Fernández, and the imposing central defender Román Torres — kept the dream alive.
The breakthrough came on 10 October 2017 — a night that Panamanians will never forget. Needing a result against Costa Rica in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying, Román Torres headed home a dramatic late goal to secure Panama's place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The scenes of celebration in Panama City were extraordinary — fireworks, dancing in the streets, tears of pure joy. A nation's dream had come true.
At the 2018 World Cup in Group G, Panama faced Belgium, England, and Tunisia. Though they lost their first two matches, they scored their first ever World Cup goal against England and then achieved their first ever World Cup victory — defeating Tunisia 2-1 in their final group match. For a nation experiencing their first World Cup, it was a moment of pure historic joy. Panama has been building steadily ever since, with the 2026 World Cup — on their own CONCACAF doorstep — firmly in their sights.
