The Portuguese Football Story
Portugal's football story begins with one of the greatest performances in World Cup history. At the 1966 tournament in England, a team built around the genius of Eusébio da Silva Ferreira — nicknamed the Black Panther — finished third place with nine goals from Eusébio himself, earning him the Golden Boot and the Best Player award. Portugal defeated North Korea in one of the tournament's most extraordinary matches, coming from 3-0 down to win 5-3, with Eusébio scoring four. That team set a standard that would take decades to reach again.
The modern era brought fresh heartbreak. Portugal reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2006 with Luís Figo, Deco, and a young Cristiano Ronaldo, eventually finishing fourth. But the major trophy remained elusive — until Paris, July 2016. Ronaldo went off injured in extra time of the Euro final against France, but refused to leave. Instead, he stood on the touchline coaching and rallying his teammates. Eder, a substitute, scored with a stunning long-range strike in the 109th minute to win 1-0 — ending Portugal's 56-year wait for a first major international trophy.
