Football in England predates the modern era by centuries — medieval "mob football" was played in English towns as far back as the 9th century. But the modern game was born on 26 October 1863, when representatives of London football clubs met at the Freemasons' Tavern to form the Football Association and write down the rules of the game for the first time.

The first official international football match was played on 30 November 1872, when England faced Scotland at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow. The match finished 0–0, but it marked the beginning of international football — a tradition that has now spanned over 150 years and spread to every corner of the globe.

The Football League — the world's first professional football league — was founded in 1888. By the early 20th century, the game had spread from England to every corner of the globe, carried by British sailors, merchants, and teachers.

England's proudest moment came on 30 July 1966, when Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy at Wembley Stadium after a 4–2 victory over West Germany in the World Cup Final. Goals from Geoff Hurst — including a controversial third and a stunning fourth — sealed one of sport's most memorable victories.

In the decades since, England have come close but not captured a second major title — memorable failures at penalty shootouts and near-misses in semi-finals have earned the national team a reputation for heartbreak. But under Gareth Southgate, England reached back-to-back European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024, signalling a new era of genuine tournament quality.

With Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden leading the charge, the 2026 World Cup in North America represents England's best chance in a generation.
